Punk wars gg allin12/23/2023 My lack of ability forced me to find my own goofy style, and once I started seeing the underground comics of, say, R. Drawing alongside these child prodigies was humbling, yet oddly encouraging. I remember kids in my first grade class drawing perfect renditions of Thor swinging his hammer, or Spidey slinging his web. Trust me, I wanted to draw like all of my favorite Marvel artists, but there was no way that was ever going to happen. My style developed from absolutely sucking at drawing Captain America. How did you develop your style of drawing? Hell, before Photoshop, I’d go through a bottle of whiteout a week! Laying out a three panel comic can take an eternity. My spatial reasoning-I had to look up how to spell spatial-is completely screwed. Don’t get me wrong, doodling has a calming effect, but if I know ahead of time that I want to draw the band crammed into a hot air balloon flying over Florida, I become gripped with anxiety. Pounding away on my guitar and coming up with exciting riffs is straight up meditative. That said, I definitely enjoy rocking more than drawing. These days I can’t even really separate the two. Gotta soothe the soul somehow, right?Īs far as what I’m more passionate about, playing music or making comics? I absolutely love them both the same. Which are you more passionate about, punk music or being a comic writer and artist?įor the record, I love all kinds of music! When we’re on tour, we almost exclusively listen to country music in the van. If One Of These Bottles Should Happen To Fall by World War IX I just don’t have the patience to mold mountains of foam latex! Plus, I’m a huge GWAR fan, and their melding of art and music inspires me to no end. Playing a dismal show doesn’t just have to be demoralizing, it can also be fodder for a knee-slapping cartoon. I figured there’re plenty of laughable disasters that happen in WWIX, so why not make those humiliating gems the focus of my comics. I had just finished an autobiographical comic about my obsession with GG Allin-eloquently titled “Slap In the Face: My Obsession with GG Allin”-and well, I wanted to keep talking about myself. Perhaps it was the blind arrogance of youth? I hated sports, and there were only so many reruns of “Three’s Company” one kid could watch, so I just kept drawing.Īs far as combining the comics with our band World War IX, that goes back about seven years. Plus, there’re no rules when you’re self taught! I always got Ds in art class, but for some reason, I stuck with it. One of the things that attracted me to the medium was the solitary nature of it, the escapism. What is your connection to comics? When did you first get the idea to combine comics with music? As raw as it is brave, the record and comic are just the latest offering from one of the most original punk bands calling New York home right now. The latest example is the self-released autobiographical EP, If One of These Bottles Should Happen to Fall, detailing his decision to get sober. It seems fitting that Melkmann has married his two passions, supplementing his albums with accompanying comics. He also loves drawing, but could never match the illustrations of his heroes in the Marvel Comics universe, coming closer to offbeat underground comics like Robert Crumb. As a result, he started his own gritty punk band, World War IX, who revel in fun, aggressive, loud punk rock. Justin Melkmann has a longstanding fascination with GG Allin.
